Governor Murphy's Supreme Court Nominees Clear the Senate Judiciary Committee

In separate hearings yesterday, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance Governor Murphy’s nominations of Judge Fasciale and Rachel Wainer Apter to the Supreme Court. They would fill the seats that became vacant when Justices LaVecchia and Fernandez-Vina retired. Judge Fasciale would fill the later seat and Ms. Wainer Apter the former.

The Judiciary Committee voted unanimously in favor of Judge Fasciale’s nomination. The vote on Ms. Wainer Apter was 8-3, with all of the Committee’s Democrats and Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-Union) voting in favor. Three other Republican Senators voted against the nomination.

The full Senate is expected to consider the nominations on Monday, October 17. Approval of both is expected. (As there will be no posts on this blog next Monday or Tuesday, coverage of the full Senate vote will not appear here until next Wednesday at the earliest).

There is one other vacancy on the Court, created by the retirement of Justice Albin this past summer. Governor Murphy has not yet made a nomination for that seat.
